“OLD SCHOOL” GRASS DOUBLES, TRIPS, & QUADS RULES
Big court - 30X60
No net serves
Block is not a touch
Side out scoring

No open hand indoor tipping.

No hand setting over the net, even in Open or Coed AA divisions.

Hand setting should be clean and simultaneous. Hand setting for Juniors can be officiated similar to indoor.

-Serve receive with finger action NOT ALLOWED in old school rules
-Serve receive with hands (no finger action) is allowed. Hands do NOT have to be together

1 rule for Open Level and Coed AA only
1) Taking a free ball with open hands – must be clean and simultaneous

Hard driven balls
-Finger action/“beach digs” allowed for hard driven balls
-Slight tolerance for a double contact if:
1) ball was hard driven
2) you DIDN’T have time to change your technique

Directional Blocking - directional blocking is allowed as long as you don’t “throw” the ball. The length of contact is what should be judged by the referee

Other rules:
1) 1 drop allowed per service rotation – 2nd is a fault
2) You may go under the net to get a ball but cannot interfere with opponents on the other side
3) Can NOT enter another adjacent court to chase a ball
4) Touching the poll at net height is a fault. Touching a pole below the net is not, unless the net is disrupted by the player.
5) If the hitting action finished in touching the net, it is a fault, even if the ball was grounded before the touch.

Work teams:
-Input scores using the Live Scoring feature in VolleyballLife
-Required to call bad contacts, net touches, foot faults, track side changes and timeouts
-Side changes occur every 4 points in games being played to 11 and every 5 points for games being played to 15
-Disagreements best settled by replay

Courtesy rule for Coed BB Doubles:
2 years in a row the vote has been against the courtesy rule. We will continue to put this up for a vote every year before play begins. Guys must serve guys side of court (draw an imaginary line dividing the court in half lengthwise).  1 mistake allowed per GAME with no penalty.  More than 1 is a side out.

Playing Level Guidelines:
-Play to the level of the best player on your team: If you are an A player and your partner is a AA player, you should register to play in division AA
-If you play in the Pro/Open division, you must play in at least AA on other days, regardless of your partners’ level.
-If you make it to a final in any PGO division, you must play the next highest level available in future PGOs.

Triples rules:
According to the Godfather of triples volleyball himself (The Founder of the Waupaca Boatride), one-handed setting is allowed in all triples divisions.

Quads rules:
-All rules already listed apply to quads as well (no net serves, block is not a touch, side out scoring, no indoor tipping)
-Other considerations: 1) there is no hand passing in old school quads 2) other than serving, there is no need to rotate positionally like in 6’s
-Hand setting in quads should be officiated similarly to doubles

Tiebreaks:
-All divisions INCLUDING Open/Pro: 1. Head-to-Head 2. Points among tied teams (aka head to head points) 3. Overall points
-3 way ties for 1st - 1st place decided by points among tied teams/overall points. 2nd & 3rd will play a rally scoring play-in game across all divisions
-3 way ties for 2nd - 2nd place decided by points among tied teams/overall points. No play-in games

For seeding playoffs:
1. Pool finish 2. Win loss ratio 3. Point differential

Sandbagging:
If you are caught sandbagging, you can finish pool but you do not make playoffs.

Women’s Net Height
Confirmed by speaking directly to the Founder of the Pottstown Rumble and the Founder of Park & Sun, Women’s net height is played on the lowest setting of Park & Sun nets (7’4”).
